New Ride Share Program in Nice
It’s been a long 15 years Velo Bleu, but now it’s time to go. Nice’s much-maligned Velo Beu bike share program has finally been retired. Plagued with problems from the start, the Velo Bleu was complicated to use involving an obscure system with cards and codes that was complex for locals let alone tourists. Plus, the bikes were heavy and often broken.
It’s all over now. Two new operators, Lime and Pony have taken over the ride share program. Well, only Lime is currently operational. There was a bug with Pony’s electrical system and their bikes have been temporarily retired.
Although more expensive than the old Velo Bleu, the process for both Lime and Pony is significantly easier. Just
- download the app,
- add a payment method,
- choose your plan
- locate the nearest bike
- scan the QR code on the bike’s handlebars
- return the bike to a dedicated parking area (very important)
All available bikes are electric. Although Pony claims to offer mechanical bikes I haven’t found any. Scooters are also available. Both apps offer to rent by the minute but it’s usually cheaper to look for a daily or weekly plan. For example, Pony offers (or offered) a 7-day pass for only €5. Lime has a basket in front which makes it good for carrying packages. Pony has a rear seat for a second passenger.
For those of us who live in Nice, this new system makes it much easier to rent a bike at the last minute in case of a pressing appointment in the midst of a transport strike.
For those who prefer renting a mechanical bike see my Biking in Nice page for rental recommendations, bike tours and my favorite scenic bike rides.
