Taking a ferry boat to Cannes sure beats sitting in traffic and is more scenic than the train. This boat leaves Nice daily in summer at 9am, arrives in Cannes at 10:10am and returns from Cannes at 5:45pm. Plenty of time to sightsee and take a swim on one of Cannes' sandy beaches.
Lying just off the coast of Cannes, the Iles de Lerins consists of the Ile Sainte Marguerite and the Ile Saint Honorat. Both are idyllic wooded islands with rocky coves, walking paths (there are no cars) and crystal clear waters. Saint Tropez is legendary for its sandy beaches (technically in neigboring Ramatuelle) and yacht-studded waters. It's also known for its legendary traffic jams. Avoid the hassle with this 2 1/2 hour trip along the coast that departs Nice at 9am and leaves Saint Tropez for the return trip at 4:30pm.
Of course it's much quicker and cheaper to get out to the Iles de Lerins if you're already in Cannes. This ferry boat leaves hourly from Cannes for the 50-minute ride to Ile Sainte Marguerite.
The Ile Sainte Marguerite can get crowded in the summer. For a calmer experience head to Ile Saint Honorat. Run by a community of 12 monks headquartered in the 14th-century Lerins Abbey, you can visit the vineyards and several historic chapels.
